Celebrating the Bard’s Birthday
The Bard’s birthday was celebrated in style when Lodge Newton Mearns No.1706 and Lodge Sir George Cathcart No.617 held their second joint Burns Supper in the Masonic Halls in Busby.
Around sixty Brethren and guests gathered on Thursday, 24 January 2019, to enjoy an evening of poetry, song and humour. They were welcomed by RWM Bro. Mahmood Ullah of Lodge Newton Mearns.
The haggis having been piped in and duly addressed by Bro. Sam Milwain, secretary of Lodge Sir George Cathcart, and the meal concluded, The Immortal Memory was proposed by Burns enthusiast, Bro. Martin Cassidy, WJW of Lodge Craigends No.1042
Bro. Stuart Brodie, RWM of Lodge The King’s Park No.1386, provided his spirited all-action rendition of Tam O’Shanter and Bro. John Hutcheson, RWM of Lodge Bridgeton & Glasgow Shamrock & Thistle No.275, appeared in nightshirt to recite a memorable version Holy Willie’s Prayer.
Bro. John also had feet tapping with a series of songs and pipers Spencer Veitch, Davy Smith and Alan Stevenson also provided stirring music interspersed with a Toast to the Lassies proposed by Bro. Robert Noble and a reply by Bro. Ken Stein PM, both of Lodge Newton Mearns.
The evening included two raffles including a special Whisky Raffle with prizes of bottles of malt organised by Bro. Alistair McTaggart PM of Lodge Sir George Cathcart.
A vote of thanks to the Artists was proposes by RWM Bro. William Sutherland of Lodge Sir George Cathcart who also thanked all who had turned up to make it a successful evening.
